The Path of the Gods is certainly the best known and most famous path on the Amalfi Coast. It is located between Agerola and Positano, on the Lattari Mountains, and following easy passages bordered by spectacular cliffs and crossing various gorges, the path offers spectacular views of the entire coast: you can almost touch Praiano, Positano, the islets of Li Galli, the island of Capri.
You will walk among the typical Mediterranean maquis, including chestnuts, Neapolitan alders, holm oaks, oriental hornbeams, beeches, field maples and Neapolitan maple trees, manna ash, lindens, elms , laurels, elders, downy oaks, Turkey oaks, wild olives, carobs, strawberry trees and alaternos.
Then there are the typical shrub species: myrtle, lentisk, rosemary, helichrysum, Phoenician juniper, cistus, tree spurge, broom. In spring, the meadows and undergrowth are enriched by the flowers of cyclamen, violets, crocuses, colchicuses, daffodils, anemones, bluebells, santolines, wild garlic, St. John’s lilies and various small orchids.
Until the mid-1950s, the path of the gods was one of the communication routes that united the towns of the Amalfi Coast, both on the sea and on the mountains. For years it was used as a mule track, until it was rediscovered and adapted as a hiking trail.
Where does the Path of the Gods start?
The classic path starts from Bomerano, a hamlet of Agerola, at about 650 meters above sea level, and ends in Nocelle, a hamlet of Positano, at 425 metres, from where you have three options to reach Positano:
– go down the 1,700 steps that take you to the coastal road, and then a further twenty minute walk;
– after the first flight of stairs, turn right and continue on the paved path, reach the hamlet of Monte Pertuso, and then take the stairs following the signs for Positano centre;
– take the public bus which takes you to the center in twenty minutes.
To return to Agerola and pick up the cars, you have three options:
– take the Sita bus from Positano to Amalfi, and another one from Amalfi to Agerola;
– take the ferry from Positano to Amalfi, and then the Sita bus from Amalfi to Agerola;
– take a taxi from Positano to Agerola (very expensive).
How to get to Bomerano with public transportation?
– From Naples take the Sita bus (1h 30 min);
– From Sorrento take the Sita bus to Amalfi, and then another one to Agerola (2 hours);
– From Salerno take the ferry to Amalfi, and then the Sita bus to Agerola (1h 30min)
How to get to Bomerano with your own car?
Take the A3 Napoli-Salerno motorway and exit at Castellammare di Stabia, then follow the signs for Sorrento, and after the first tunnel exit at Gragnano; at the crossroads go right and at the roundabout right again, following the signs for Agerola. You will go up following the windy road and in less than 30 minutes you will arrive in Piazza Capasso, from where the path of the Gods begins: 500 meters after the square you will find a large free parking spot, where you can leave your car.
